Metal Braces

Something to smile about

Metal braces give you more confidence and more reasons to smile.

About Metal Braces

Fixed metal braces are glued onto the teeth and are the most frequently used braces. After placement, they are normally adjusted every 8-10 weeks and are generally in place for around 18 months, depending upon the severity of the initial problem. Many of our patients choose to brighten up their braces with coloured elastics, which hold the wire into the brackets. Metal Braces are suitable for children under 18.

A modern take on an old method

Technology has advanced in orthodontics and metal braces are now smaller and more compact than ever before, making them more comfortable to wear as well. You can even jazz them up with some colour. The tiny elastic bands used with each bracket to hold the wire in position come in a variety of colours. You can change the colour at your adjustment appointments. If you prefer your brace to look more discreet, you can opt for either the silver or tooth coloured elastics.

Benefits of Metal Braces

Metal braces are usually less expensive than more modern devices newer to the market and can correct the most difficult problems with teeth. Since they are the most traditional and common device used for straightening teeth, metal braces may be more likely to be covered by insurance plans.

Advantages of Metal Braces

  • Metal brackets usually are the least expensive of all types of braces.
  • Treatment time is usually the shortest among all types of braces.
  • You can choose a darker ligature, which hides curry, smoking or black coffee stains.
  • Self-ligating braces do not contain rubber ligatures, so staining will never be a problem.
  • They are strong and rarely break.
  • Golden brackets are unique, novel and generally look attractive.

Disadvantages of Metal Braces

  • They are more noticeable than ceramic and Invisalign
  • At first, they are less comfortable (but that feeling wears off after a couple of weeks).
  • Canker sores irritate the gums more than ceramic brackets.
